Dr. Hemamala is a rarity in the world of hepatology. This quiet spoken doctor has multiple specialty qualifications that are highly useful in the management of liver transplant patients.

Dr. Hemamala was an outstanding student from her MBBS days with distinctions in anatomy, physiology and ENT. She worked as internist/hospitalist for 8 years before opting for higher training in critical care medicine at Lakeshore Hospitals and at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. She subsequently went on to become an attending with the Chennai critical care group and worked with critical care oncology patients.

She went on to secure the first rank in the state for DM Medical gastroenterology and joined the Madras Medical College, Department of Medical gastroenterology. It is at this place, she discovered her flair and passion for the treatment of patients with liver disease. Her thesis was, of course on " acute on Chronic liver failure". She went on to become a consultant hepatologist and gastroenterologist at Kauvery Hospital, Chennai.

In 2014, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She joined as the Transplant hepatology fellow in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2015.

She is now the Transplant Hepatologist at MIOT Hospital, Chennai.

Her interests include the biology of hepatocellular carcinoma, application of Telemedicine in Hepatology, Hepatitis C and acute liver failure.

Her vision in bringing top notch specialty care in liver diseases to the people of Chennai has given birth to THE LIVER WORLD.
